This Privacy Policy discloses the online privacy practices for The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation and affiliated entities, including Vulcan Inc., (collectively, “Grantor”) and applies to the information collected through (the "Site"). By accessing and/or using the Site, you are consenting to the collection, storage, and disclosure of data as described in this Privacy Policy.

Grantor reserve the right, at any time, to modify, alter, update, or remove portions of this Privacy Policy. We will post any changes to this Policy on this page so you can readily review the most current version. We will alert you that changes have been made by indicating at the bottom of this Privacy Policy the date it was last updated.

Information Collected

When you browse the Site, we and our partners collect certain information about your device and use of the Site automatically. We collect additional information when you apply for a grant or otherwise provide us with personal information, as follows. 
Your IP Address

An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a number that is automatically assigned to your device every time you browse the Internet. When a user requests a page from the Site, our servers log the user's current IP address. We use IP addresses to help diagnose problems with our servers and to administer the Site.

Cookies and Beacons

We use "cookies" (pieces of data your browser stores in your computer's memory to help improve your experience and the Site and understand how users interact with the Site. We may also collect information using beacons (also known as tracking pixels), which are electronic images that may be used to help deliver cookies, count visits, and understand usage of the Site. 

Most browsers are set up to accept cookies, but you can usually change your browser settings to refuse them. Grantor does not use cookies to retrieve personal information about you from your computer. If you disable cookies, your browser may experience some erratic behavior on some portions of the Site.

Third Party Data Collection

Grant Applications

When you apply for a grant through the Site, you will be asked to provide a variety of information regarding your organization and your grant request, including, without limitation, your organization's name, focus, address, phone number, financial history, tax identification number, and the purpose for which you intend to use the grant. All or any part of the information we collect during the application process is referred to in this Privacy Policy as "Application Information."  When you apply for a grant through the Site, your application may be processed in part through a third party software provider who will also have access to the Application Information and is not subject to the terms of this privacy policy.

Funds from either an Allen Distinguished Educator grant or a microgrant are considered taxable income. Recipients are responsible for reporting and paying all relevant taxes.

Personal Information

From time to time, we may sponsor sweepstakes or contests or provide other opportunities for you to provide personal information to us, including your name, phone number, address, and other information, which may include classroom and school demographics (“Personal Information”). We use this information to process and deliver sweepstakes and contest entries, to communicate with you, and to understand and improve the Site and the services we offer. 
Disclosures to Third Parties

As described in our Terms of Use, the Grantor Does not accept any information provided through the Site on a confidential or proprietary basis. From time to time, therefore, the Grantor may disclose such information, including, without limitation, your Application Information, to third parties. For example, the Grantor may disclose your Application Information to other grant makers, to organizations of grant makers, and to personnel of our affiliated companies who are furthering the charitable purpose of the Grantor. In addition, if we make a grant to you or if you provide us Personal Information, such as to enter a contest or sweepstakes, we may disclose your Application Information or Personal Information to the public by, among other things, identifying you as a PGA Foundation grantee and describing your use of the grant or sharing ideas and feedback you have provided. The Grantor does not sell or rent your Application Information or Personal Information to third parties for marketing purposes.

Disclosures to Service Providers

We share the information we collect, including Application Information and Personal Information, with vendors, consultants and other service providers who need access to such information to carry out work on our behalf. 

Disclosures for Legal Reasons

The Grantor will also disclose information you provide through the Site, including but not limited to Application Information, when it believes, in its sole discretion, that the law requires such disclosures or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary to:
  • Comply with applicable law, regulation, or legal process;
  • Protect and defend the rights or property of the Grantor or others; or
  • Act under exigent circumstances to protect the personal safety of the public or the users of the Site.


This Privacy Policy applies only to information collected through the Site. Other Web sites (including those that we may link to or use for processing of applications) may have their own policies. The Grantor has no responsibility or control over the information-collection practices of such third parties.
